He’s the undeniable Virgo, a perfectionist with an eye for the unusual that permeates every aspect of his life, from his fashion sense to his music. He’s been compared by many to artists like Michael Jackson and Prince but prefers to be identified by his style, that which is uniquely Jelone.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Jelone’s first brush with music started out from true Southern roots. Every Sunday was spent in church where Jelone sang in the choir. It was during these childhood years that he was first exposed to some of his earliest influences in the form of Stevie Nicks and Terence Trent D’Arby. His cousin was also a backup singer for Smokey Robinson, so Jelone was allowed to go the concerts every year, to which he attributes his showbiz buzz from. Age 8 saw him penning his first song after attending a Michael Jackson concert, which was performed enthusiastically to many an imaginary audience at home.
At age 14 his creativity took on another outlet and he was a dance major at a school for performing arts, where he brushed shoulders with Erykah Badu, a fellow dancer at that time. He discovered a strong affinity to classical dance performing around the country on scholarships and practicing his belief that “Art encompasses many things and if you are an “artist,” the journey is cathartic.”
After a year and a half at performing arts school, he transferred to a private school and began his “U2, Depeche Mode, and Cure years”, drawing on his first love, music, and incorporating his new musical interests into his own unique style. At 17 New York called and he moved to attend university, discovering a jamabalaya of artistic and esoteric energy, perfect for the Jelone’s of this world who hate stereotypes.
After immersing himself in the vibrant club culture of New York, Jelone set off on a journey of self-development that led him to West London, where he joined an open mike circuit and started creating a local buzz. Through a mutual friend in the fashion industry, he was introduced to Jason Price, Managing Director of Ice-PR, soon after signing a recording contract.
Under Ice-PR he has released a white label called “Steppin’ Out,” a remake of Jo Jackson’s “Steppin’”. The single recieved high praise in the Underground scene and prompted the decision to produce the upcoming album, “My Sheknique” set for release in September 2007. If his track record is anything to go by, the public will very soon get to know this striking and talented individual. |
